Identify what you enjoy
Love running? Start with a 5K or 10K. Prefer gym workouts? Look at Hyrox or CrossFit competitions. Want adventure? Try an OCR event. Enjoy being outdoors? Trail running is for you. Prefer variety? Triathlon combines three sports. Don't overthink it — your first event is about experience, not performance.
Start with a beginner-friendly distance
Running: 5K (parkrun is free). OCR: 5km course. Hyrox: the full format is beginner-accessible. Triathlon: sprint distance (750m/20km/5km). CrossFit: local throwdown or Friday Night Lights. Check the cost table above — some events are free, some cost £150+. Pick a distance you can train for in your available time.
Find events near you and shortlist them
Go to the events page and use the location filter to search by your postcode. Filter by event type — Running, Hyrox, OCR, whatever you picked in step 1. Or browse by city to see everything happening near you. Check each event's difficulty rating, format, and price. Save the ones that interest you so you can compare dates and distances before committing.
Find a club that trains for your event type
Search fitness clubs near you. Filter by type to find clubs that match your event — Hyrox gyms have SkiErgs and sleds, CrossFit boxes have Olympic lifting platforms, running clubs have structured group sessions. Check club pages for specialist equipment lists and upcoming events in your area. Training with a group makes you faster, keeps you accountable, and you'll meet people doing the same events.
Register and commit
The biggest step is signing up. Once you've paid, you're committed — and that commitment is what makes you train. Register at least 8 weeks out to give yourself proper preparation time. Tell someone you're doing it. Better yet, sign up with a friend. Read our sport-specific guides for training plans: Hyrox, OCR, Running, Triathlon, Trail, Ultra.
Arrive 60–90 minutes early. Use the portaloos before the queue builds. Pin your number on the front of your top (not your shorts). Don't wear anything new — shoes, kit, food, all tested in training. Start at the back if you're nervous; you can always overtake. Nobody remembers their first-event time, everyone remembers the feeling of crossing the finish line. Smile for the photographer at the 200m mark — you'll want that photo.
